An Ecology of Spirits
This essay explores a personal metaphysics based on ecology, deeply rooted in the druidic concept of the gnosis of nature, as understood in the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA) and the Gnostic Celtic Church (GCC). It posits that spiritual truths can be derived from the natural world, covering seasonal cycles, biological processes, and ecological systems. The essay aims to define ecosystems and spirits, synthesize these concepts into an ecological metaphysics, and examine the implications of this worldview in ethics, practice, and pagan theology.
On Sweet Potato
Magically, sweet potato is a friendly and nurturing spirit that seeks companionship. It wants to meet your needs, recognize what is enough, and share the bounty of what’s left. It is a subtle magic, but one that can support you at a fundamental level.
On Pothos
I see in pothos a wonderful, but complex companion. It is a mixture of Jupiterian abundance – it can cover a park in a season – and Saturnian self-reliance. This is certainly a powerful combination, but it cares little for the plight of other plants, often overwhelming them. Pothos holds within it a protective toxin to drive others away but also works to cleanse and improve its environment. In this way, I think, it also holds the duality of the defensive Mars and the purifying Venus principles.
On Jupiter's Exaltation
Dignity schemes are interesting theoretical underpinnings of astrology, but richness can be found in the relationships between many signs and planets. Dignity need not limit us. So whether Jupiter is exalted in Leo or just has a special resonance, my aim is to explore that space. I love to question what we think we know and to dive deeply into the interplay between planet and sign and understand the fullness of that synergy or difficulty.
Radagast the Brown
In a world full of people emulating Gandalf, what do we make of Radagast? Radagast the Brown, Radagast the bird-tamer, Radagast the "simple." Radagast is usually described as failing in his mission, or - at best - choosing the wrong tactic. Is there another perspective?
On Theurgy
I grow accustomed to asking the gods for help. For are the gods not woven into the very fabric of ourselves? In fact, when seeking a god's intervention, it is not calling out to some distant power to send you aide. No, it is turning the mind and spirit towards what is already there.
Luminary Tending
And when the body is weak, go to the Moon and ask for her care. Let her show you how to be kind and gentle to your creature self.
